Nurse and Patients

Low-income adults and adolescents without access to other sources of health insurance qualify for AFC medical services. Arlington Free Clinic served over 1,450 patients in 2007, providing nearly 8,000 clinical visits. The majority of AFC patients live in zipcode 22204, in South Arlington. Sixty percent are from Spanish speaking countries, 20% are from the Middle East and Africa and 20% are from the United States. One hundred percent of AFC patients are at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. To demonstrate income, the patients provide two months of pay stubs, a letter from an employer, or, if not working, a letter of support from the person with whom they reside.

The majority of AFC patients are parents with children in Arlington County Schools. Most work at low paying jobs with few, if any, employee benefits. Some have experienced considerable misfortune as victims of domestic violence and temporarily live in the County’s shelter. AFC also serves some who receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in County facilities. Our patients include many legal immigrants who are trying to make a place for their families in America. They do not have health insurance.
