1992

Arlington County Medical Society established an Indigent Care Committee to look at ways to provide medical services for the underserved in the County

1993
  • Steering Committee formed, with the Medical Society as the sponsor, to determine feasibility of establishing a free clini
  • Medical Director and Executive Director found
  • Arlington Hospital granted $100,000 for free clinic laboratory and x-ray services
  • Thomas Jefferson Middle School welcomes free clinic
1994
  • January 11– First Tuesday general medical clinic session held at Thomas Jefferson Middle School – 12 patients treated on the first night
  • March – received $10,000 Anonymous donation
  • GYN and Chronic Care Thursday sessions added
  • Kaiser Permanente was the first corporate donor - $5,000
1995
  • 2,320 Medical Visits provided
  • First fundraiser – Family Barbeque
1996

Added Satellite clinic in Arna Valley neighborhood on Wednesday nights

  • Moved to 2926 Columbia Pike with a grant from the Arlington Community Health Foundation

  • Celebration Reception for “Point of Light” Award held at Ronald Reagan National Airport; Keynote Speaker, Surgeon General Richard Carmona

  • AFC celebrates its 10th Anniversary
  • Developed “Portraits in Care ” photo and story project
  • Total number of patients treated exceeds 9,000

2005
  • Moved to new temporary home on Fairfax Drive because of redevelopment of Columbia Pike site

  • Dr. N. Thomas Connally named Medical Director
  • New Women's Wellness Group launched for Patients
2006
  • Honored Robert P. Gruver, M.D., one of AFC's founding physicians at a reception. Nationally known journalist, David Broder, was the guest speaker.
  • Star Fund established by an anonymous donor. This endowment fund is used for patients to access special medical procedures.
  • Received Bank of America's prestigious 2006 Neighborhood Builders Award.
  • Added osteoporosis education classes
2007
  • Expanded Specialty Medicine program
  • Held first Lance Armstrong Day reception for cancer survivors
  • New nutrition class offered to teach patients to read food labels and understand contents.
  • Implemented electronic medical records to enhance patient care and to track and analyze patient data.
 
2008
  • Opened a Timely Access to Care Clinic, staffed by NP’s, to provide quicker access to care for new patients and patients with acute needs such as urinary tract infections, colds, etc.
  • Expanded Mental Health groups to include support for women who have left children in their home countries and for men dealing with chronic illness.
  • Opened a Coumadin Clinic within the Timely Access to Care clinic to provide one stop service to patients on anti-coagulant therapy.
  • Worked with architects, designers and contractors to plan LEED-certified permanent clinic space to open in May, 2009.
 
2009 halsted
  • AFC relocated to our new permanent home on Columbia Pike and hosted a wonderful grand opening celebration that was attended by almost 200 supporters, including volunteers, funders and elected officials from the County and the Commonwealth.
  • Since the beginning of 2009, AFC has seen an unprecedented increase in demand for care. Comparing January and July, the number of individuals coming to AFC seeking to become a patient increased by over 200 %.
  • Three new technologies are in the process of being implemented to enhance quality and efficiency of care.  They are our new Electronic Medical Record, HEALTHeSTATE; patient eligibility software, and the Pharmacy Connection (TPC).  All three systems will be part of patients’ records and will transform the way we operate and strengthen AFC’s long term capacity to sustain our mission and serve our community.
