Save the Date- 2009 Benefit Gala – October 17, 2009

LogoThe Arlington Free Clinic’s Special Gifts and Gala Committees are in full swing preparing for the “Passport to India” Gala, which will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner.

This black tie event will feature our fabulous silent auction and raffle, a superb dinner and dancing to the delightful sound of the band Odyssey.  As in previous years, the Silent Auction will include getaways, art and photography, sports, home and garden, and children’s items.

This year’s Gala Chair is MaryBeth Sullivan. She has a committee of 50 dedicated volunteers who are giving their time and talent to plan a special evening for all of us.

Our Special Gifts Chair is Michael T. Foster.  He and his energetic committee of 31 volunteers are raising much needed funds for the Clinic by selling table sponsorships and tickets. The revenue raised through the Gala provides a significant percentage of AFC’s annual operating budget.  Your support and generosity make it all possible. Foster

If you would like more information about this year’s Gala or would like to volunteer, please contact Pia Clark, 703-237-9729 ext.143 or pclark@arlingtonfreeclinic.org.

HalstaedAFC Has Moved!

It finally happened.  Arlington Free Clinic has now relocated to our wonderful new clinic space.  We’re on the first floor in the newly constructed Halstead Building on the corner of Walter Reed and Columbia Pike.  The entrance to the Clinic is on the newly created 11th Street South, which runs between the Halstead Building and BB&T Bank.

Please note our new address:
2921 11th Street South
Arlington, VA 22204

The general clinic phone number remains 703-979-1425.  Extensions for individual staff members are almost the same.  Simply precede the previous extension with a “1”.  For example: extension 12 is now 112; extension 24 is now 124.

The Clinic will be a LEED® certified, “green” space. AFC is the first health care space in the County and the first free clinic in Virginia to be LEED certified. If you would like a tour of the new Clinic, please contact Pat McDermott, (703) 979-1425, 121 or pmcdermott@arlingtonfreeclinic.org.

To help cover the construction costs of the new space, opportunities to name spaces in the facility are available. Donors will be recognized in the annual report and in the new Clinic space. Spaces can be named in honor or memory of someone or can be given anonymously. If you would like to discuss a naming opportunity, please call Pat McDermott at (703) 979-1425, Ext. 121 or pmcdermott@arlingtonfreeclinic.org

AvonraceCongratulations to Avon Walkers for Breast CancerBaronica

AFC was extremely well represented in the recent Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, DC which raised $6.8 million to advance access to care and find a cure for breast cancer.  Among the 3,000 participants who took part in the 2-day event were AFC’s own Jyl Pomeroy, staff nurse manager, AFC volunteer Beronica Salas and friends of AFC Sally Light and Lisa Cedrone.  Since 2002, AFC has been a proud grantee of the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund.  With Avon’s support, AFC provides lifesaving care for hundreds of low income uninsured women every year. Congratulations and thanks to all those who walked and those who supported walkers in this important event.

AFC had a visit from Scott McCaffrey, staff writer of the Sun Gazette Newspaper this week. Attached is the article he wrote about our new facility that appears on their website and in the newspaper.

AFC featured on News Channel 8

News Channel 8 visited our new Clinic facility on June 2nd to cover a Dominion Virginia Power event and major announcement .  Dominion Virginia Power donated $1M to free health care clinics in Virginia and 13 other states.  Their employees had a direct hand in making this grant possible. They redirected dollars from their normal employee recreational activities this year in order to provide additional support to important charitable causes like Arlington Free Clinic. AFC received a check for $20,000 to support immediate medical care for the uninsured.

2009 Komen Global Race for the CureKomen09

Team Arlington Free Clinic joined nearly 45,000 other participants for the 2009 Global Race for the Cure in Washington DC.  AFC breast cancer patients and their families along with Clinic staff, volunteers and friends walked or ran the 5K course.  The Clinic also had a table in the Komen Grantee tent where we had the opportunity to tell people about the Komen-funded services AFC offers medically underserved women in Arlington County. The event raised more than $4.3 million to end breast cancer forever.  Up to 75% of the Race’s net income will remain in the Washington, DC metro area to fund local programs like AFC’s.

Virginia Hospital Center and many Medical Practices Provide Vital In-Kind Services to Clinic Patients.

Arlington Free Clinic is indebted to Virginia Hospital Center for providing extensive x-ray and laboratory diagnostic services for Clinic patients every year. In FY 08, VHC donated over $1,114,158 in these in-kind services. There are also numerous local medical practices who provide a wide variety of specialty medical services in their offices for hundreds of Clinic patients. These medical practices donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of their time and expertise in FY08 to care for patients the Clinic referred to them. Click here for list of these very generous medical practices.
