Permanent Home for AFC and Naming OpportunitiesNewBuilding

In about a year, AFC will have a brand new home in South Arlington. We’ll be in the Halstead Building (pictured left) that is currently under construction on the block bordered by Columbia Pike, S. Walter Reed Drive and 11th Street.  Arlington Free Clinic will occupy a 7,500 square foot ground-floor condo that it will own. The upper floors of the building will be apartments and the other ground floor spaces will be for retail use.

The Clinic has hired Tama Duffy Day, Principal in the architectural firm of Perkins + Will, who has experience in health care design using environmentally sustainable materials.  Because it is a condo and the building infrastructure is predetermined, we will not be able to build a Leed Certified Clinic but we are interested in using as many “green” materials as possible. We believe that this will provide a healthy environment for patients, volunteers and the staff.

To help fund the interior construction of the new Clinic and general operating expenses, we are offering a wonderful “once in a lifetime” opportunity for individual, family or corporate donors to name spaces in the Clinic. Handsome plaques with donor names will be placed on the dedicated spaces. Spaces can also be named in honor or memory of someone or can be given anonymously. Donors will be recognized in a special listing in the annual report. If you would like to discuss a naming opportunity, please call Pat McDermott at (703) 979-1425, Ext. 21 or pmcdermott@arlingtonfreeclinic.org.

Kitty Jones and Jayne Talbot, who are sisters, are the Benefit Co-Chairs.  They were able to hit the ground running as they are both experienced members of the Gala Committee – Kitty served as our 2007 Decorations Chair and Jayne was a member of the 2007 Auction Committee.   Both Kitty and Jayne are very creative and we’re looking forward to a spectacular event!

Report from the AFC Medical Director - April 2008

Dr. Connally

The Clinical Services Committee, composed of seven volunteer physicians, other volunteers with medical management experience, staff nurses, pharmacy staff, and Nancy Pallesen, AFC’s Executive Director, continues to meet monthly. We discuss technical medical issues, ways to make the clinic sessions more efficient and to adopt the newest recommendations from medical journals or professional conferences attended by our members.

Lance Armstrong Foundation’s

LIVESTRONG DAY 2008
Tuesday, May 13th.
Join the Fight!

Lance

AFC is proud to be partnered with the Lance Armstrong Foundation as we work together to close the unacceptable gaps between what is known about cancer in the year 2008 and what we can DO to prevent, screen and treat cancer.

On Tuesday, May 13, AFC will join other Lance Armstrong Foundation supported organizations across the country in a nationwide effort to highlight the need to make the fight against cancer a national priority.  We invite all staff, volunteers and patients to wear yellow that day in support of those efforts and to show support for our AFC cancer survivors.  A variety of activities are being planned at AFC to remind  our patients that AFC partners with LAF in this effort, to be sure patients have access to the information they need in their daily lives to prevent cancer, and to be sure they are aware of the efforts being made across the country to address the challenges of survivorship.

LAF continues to be a champion on Capitol Hill, lobbying for changes in the way cancer care is delivered in the US, and ensuring that in this year of presidential elections, all candidates are aware of the issues that are important to cancer survivors.  LAF is also a strong advocate for survivorship within the health care system and a generous sponsor of cancer research.

Virginia Hospital Center and many Medical Practices Provide Vital In-Kind Services to Clinic Patients.

Arlington Free Clinic is indebted to Virginia Hospital Center for providing extensive x-ray and laboratory diagnostic services for Clinic patients every year. In FY 07, VHC donated over $811,000 in these in-kind services. There are also numerous local medical practices who provide a wide variety of specialty medical services in their offices for hundreds of Clinic patients. These medical practices donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of their time and expertise in FY07 to care for patients the Clinic referred to them. Click here for list of these very generous medical practices.
